Broadchurch actress Jodie Whittaker is the new Doctor Who - and will take over from current Time Lord Peter Capaldi. Moffat has been involved in the resurgence of both Doctor Who and another famed BBC series, Sherlock.

"I'm beyond excited to begin this epic journey - with Chris and every Whovian on this planet", Whittaker said in a statement. Because I like to be able to learn the lines and do some preparation and come in and give it the vigour and fun. The actress, who is best known for her role as Beth Latimer in Broadchurch, also starred in such films as Adult Life Skills, Attack the Block (in which she co-starred with John Boyega) and Venus. "Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength, and warmth to the role", Chris Chibnall, the show's new head writer and executive producer, told Reuters. "The 13th Doctor is on her way".

Jodie Whittaker will be the new Doctor.

"I always knew I wanted the 13th Doctor to be a woman".

Whittaker is expected to first appear in the Christmas Special and take over the role in the following season.

He then went on to share his disappointment at the negative reactions from fans, especially those who vowed to boycott the show.

Whittaker will make her onscreen debut as The Doctor on Christmas Day during the Doctor Who Christmas special. The series began in 1963, ceasing to air in 1989, before it had a revival in 2005. She'll then be on full-time Doctoring duties from 2018, when the next series starts.

Whittaker told the Radio Times she hopes the show's fans won't be "scared by my gender". "It's more than an honor to play the Doctor. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one", she said.
